A 100-year-old farmhouse in Pine River, Michigan, caught fire on Sunday, injuring the homeowner and killing her pet dog.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the farmhouse at W2784 County Rd P, Merrill in the Lincoln County town of Pine River on Sunday afternoon after the officers received information regarding a fire. According to the police, a deputy attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher but wasn’t successful as the smoke started spreading and got suffocating due to which the officer had to get out of the house.

Police said the fire started from the kitchen area of the house. After the deputy’s failed attempt, the fire quickly grew but was mostly contained to the kitchen.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and after hours of hard work, they were able to put out the fire. The farmhouse was about 100-year-old so the firefighters worked for hours double-checking the walls and ceilings to make sure the scene was clear.

The homeowner, a 50-year-old woman, whose identity was not revealed, was the only person inside the home when the fire broke out. She suffered burn injuries and was immediately rushed by the Merrill Fire Department Ambulance to Aspirus Wausau Hospital. She was treated at the hospital and her injuries were described to be non-life-threatening.

The woman, before getting out of the house, made sure to help out her pets who were also in the house. She helped her two dogs and two cats to escape but sadly, she could not save one dog that remained in the house.

Firefighters later located the dog during a search and tried their best to revive the animal but their attempt went in vain. The dog was pronounced dead at the scene.

The homeowner believes the fire broke out from the stove.

Pine River firefighters at the scene were aided by the Towns of Hewitt, Corning, Texas, and Russell fire departments as well as deputies and the Pine River first responders.
