KEY POINTS

  • "Midnight Ghost Hunt" is a team-based, hide-and-seek game with a twist
  • Hunters can use several weapons, tools and perks to eradicate ghosts
  • Ghosts become tougher and deadlier once midnight strikes

There have been plenty of ghost hunting and hide-and-seek games released over the past few years, but none of them quite matches the sheer chaotic fun of “Midnight Ghost Hunt.”

Though it might seem like another “Phasmophobia” clone at first glance, Vaulted Sky Games’ “Midnight Ghost Hunt” mashes the ghost hunting and hide-and-seek subgenres together to create a team-based multiplayer experience that stands on its own merits well.

This 4v4 PvP game pits a squad of ghost hunters against a team of poltergeists inside large and highly-detailed maps. The hunters are equipped with retro/sci-fi weapons and gadgets similar to the “Ghostbusters” of old. Choose from a selection of rudimentary laser guns, tools and traps before heading in for the hunt.

Meanwhile, ghosts can possess and hide inside objects to avoid detection. They can also lure hunters into traps to disable them or take them out entirely. Creative use of haunted suits of armor, cannons and more can spell the end for even the most prepared of hunting parties.

One thing that sets “Midnight Ghost Hunt” apart from other “Prop Hunt”-style games is that if the hunters fail to destroy all of their targets by midnight, all of the ghosts become supercharged and become much more lethal. If even one ghost remains once the clock strikes midnight, then all of them will respawn with a vengeance.

The post-midnight chaos puts the hunters at a heavy disadvantage, and the game of hide-and-seek becomes an all-out brawl for survival. It is one team against the other, and only the most creative and coordinated of players will be able to come out on top.

So far, other users have received “Midnight Ghost Hunt” very positively. Steam users pointed out that for an early access title, the game is surprisingly polished and well-balanced.

Old “Prop Hunt” tactics like shooting every object in sight simply don’t work in “Midnight Ghost Hunt” and the added element of trapping and ambushing for ghosts was deemed a very fun mechanic. On the other hand, some players have complained about needlessly-competitive public matches at times.
