Mindy Kaling Talks About Pregnancy, ‘Really Excited’ To Be A Mom

Mindy Kaling has finally opened up about her pregnancy.

In July, rumors of Kaling expecting her first child with a mystery man first surfaced. “The Mindy Project” star has remained mum about her pregnancy in the following weeks, but she will finally address the reports during her interview with “Today” this week.

While chatting with host Willie Geist on “Today,” Kaling confirmed that she is pregnant with her first child and shared that she is “really excited” to be a mom. “It’s so unknown to me. I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I’m like, ‘OK, it’s out of my hands,’ which is kind of a fun feeling,” Kaling revealed.

As for her perspective on parenting, Kaling, 38, touched on the criticisms parents usually receive from outsiders regarding how they raise their child, adding her trademark sense of humor in her response. “It’s so easy to criticize parenting until you’re a parent, so one of the nice things about becoming a parent is that I’ll be able to openly criticize other parenting because I will have a child,” she joked.

Kaling also revealed that her late mom is her inspiration in raising her child. “My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us, just loved us and really wanted us to be happy no matter what we did,” she said of her mother. “My career choice was not something that she was familiar with and she was just so supportive of that. And if I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I’d be so happy.”

Kaling’s full “Today” interview with Geist airs on Sunday, Sept. 10. This is the first time that Kaling will be publicly confirming her pregnancy, but this does not mean some of her friends and family are not aware that she is expecting. In July, Oprah Winfrey revealed that her “A Wrinkle In Time” co-star told her about the big news while they were standing in the press line at Disney’s D23 Expo.

“That’s when she told me. My mouth dropped,” Winfrey told People. “What did you just say? she said, ‘Oh, Oprah, I don’t think you know. I’m 5 months pregnant.’ And I said, ‘WHAAAAT?!’”

Although Kaling has opened up about her pregnancy, she has yet to mention the father of her baby. “She is not telling anyone, not even close friends, who the father is,” a source said.
