Two young sisters in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh were arrested this week after they allegedly murdered their own 45-year-old father over his abuse toward them and their ailing mother.

The two unnamed girls, aged 12 and 17, allegedly used an ax to fatally hack their father, identified as Sahdev Netam, in their home located in the district of Rajnandgaon late Tuesday after he attempted to beat up their mother, newspaper The Times of India first reported.

According to police, Netam had returned home drunk prior to the incident and became enraged over the food that was being cooked. He then looked for an ax to attack his wife with after she refused to give in to his demand to give him Rs 5,000 ($66) that had been set aside for household work, officer Ashirwad Rahatgaonkar of the Ambagarh Chowki police station said.

"Already fed up with [the] everyday mess Netam would create, the girls picked up the axe and attacked him," Rahatgaonkar, whose station had jurisdiction over the area where the incident took place, said.

The younger sister — a sixth-grader — allegedly attacked Netam once and floored him, according to the officer. The eldest, who was an out-of-school-youth who helped the family with house chores and farming, then allegedly hacked her father repeatedly until he died.

Authorities were informed of the incident Wednesday morning and apprehended the two siblings, as per The Times of India. Their mother reportedly told the two teenagers to go with the police without any resistance.

Upon being interrogated, the girls told police that Netam used to fuss about the sisters studying and taking care of their mother, which allegedly would often lead to them being physically and verbally abused, according to the outlet. The elder sister recalled that Netam allegedly would thrash them and take all their money if he ever spotted them in the market.

Police arrested the two girls under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, and further investigations on the incident are to follow. The two were also presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.
