A medical examiner confirmed Tuesday that the body found over the weekend in a wooded area near an Orlando apartment complex was missing college student Miya Marcano.

Medical officials have yet to determine the 19-year-old’s cause of death and her case is still under investigation.

"A positive identification of a female whose body was recovered in a wooded area on Oct. 2, 2021, has been identified as Miya Marcano," Orange and Osceola Counties Chief Medical Examiner Joshua Stephany said in a statement Tuesday.

"This case is currently under active law enforcement investigation and any further requests for information, including cause and manner of death, will be deferred to the Orange County Sheriff's Office."

Marcano, a student at Valencia College, went missing on Sept. 24. Her body was found on Saturday around 10:45 a.m. near the Tymber Skan apartments in Orange County, about 18 miles away from her home. She was expected to take a plane to visit her family in South Florida the evening she disappeared but never made it to her flight.

So far, the only person of interest is Armando Caballero, who used to live in the apartment complex and whose cell phone records showed him near or in the complex when Marcano went missing.

Officials said Caballero had previously shown a romantic interest in Marcano but she had repeatedly rejected him. Caballero, 27, was found dead of an apparent suicide three days after Marcano disappeared.
