A woman in India was burnt alive with her child, who was about a year and a half old, by her brother-in-law after she resisted his attempt to sexually assault her.

The incident took place in Dindigul, in the southern Indian state of Tamilnadu on Saturday. The woman, identified as Anjalai, 22, went to herd sheep when her brother-in-law, Karuppaiah, 30, followed her and tried to sexually assault her, DT Next reported.

When the victim, who was with her child at the time, raised an alarm, Karuppaiah hacked them both, according to the outlet. The man then set the two on fire, Live Hindusthan reported. After the incident came to light, the locals beat up Karuppaiah following which he had to be taken to the hospital.

Investigators revealed that Anjalai, her husband Sivakumar, a daily wage earner, and Karuppiah lived as a joint family. The latter would frequently misbehave with Anjalai, as per DT Next.

Cops were alerted of the incident by Sivakumar and a case was filed against his brother under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

In a tragic incident in the eastern Indian state of Assam, a 12-year-old pregnant girl was burnt alive by her employer after she sought leave to go home, in April 2021. Prakash Borthakur, 70, and his son, Nayanmoni, 25, were arrested after the child's charred body was discovered. Borthakur's family had reportedly brought the girl home from a nearby tribal village, when she was just 7, by promising her parents they would send her to school. The victim's mother, however, said she hadn't been allowed to see her daughter for five years. Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR), said the child got pregnant after being sexually abused.
