A woman has been accused of stabbing her 10-year-old son multiple times and then herself at a Colorado residence.

The Greeley mother was arrested after both she and her son survived, police said Tuesday.

Officers from the Greeley Police Department responded to the house at around 5:10 a.m. on Dec. 15, Denver7 reported.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Susan Lucero, 41, and her child with multiple stab wounds. The mother and her son were taken to the hospital, according to 9News.

Responding officers were initially under the impression that an unknown suspect fled the scene after stabbing the two victims.

"Greeley Police officers were dispatched to a home in the 200 block of 9th Avenue on reports that two people had been stabbed," the police department said in a statement. "While officers were en route, information was relayed by dispatchers that the unknown suspect had fled the scene."

"Greeley Police Major Crime detectives, evidence technicians and detectives from other divisions were all called to assist," it added.

However, an investigation later revealed that there was no unknown suspect involved in the incident. Police learned that Lucero stabbed her son multiple times and then repeatedly stabbed herself before cops found them.

Lucero was eventually released from the hospital and taken into custody.

"On December 18, Lucero was cleared from the hospital and transported to the Weld County Jail," the police department also said in its statement.

The mother is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder (a class 2 felony), first-degree assault (a class 3 felony), child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury (a class 3 felony) and felony menacing (a class 5 felony).

The circumstances that led to the stabbing are currently unclear.

A similar incident was reported in October after a 35-year-old mother stabbed and killed her 5-year-old daughter inside Spring Creek Park in Texas. The woman then drove to a hospital and told the staff that her daughter's body was outside in a parked vehicle. The child was found with a stab wound to her neck and was eventually pronounced dead at the hospital.
