American women were granted the right to vote on Aug. 26, 1920, and now more than 100 years later, the anniversary of the historical decision is known as National Women's Equality Day.

A bill to designate Aug. 26 as Women's Equality Day was first presented on July 30, 1971, by Rep. Bella Abzug, D-N.Y.

Congress didn't pass a joint resolution declaring Aug. 26 Women's Equality Day until 1973.

Along with commemorating the passing of the 19th Amendment, the day also highlights the continued efforts by women to achieve full equality in society.
