KEY POINTS

  • Arizona State junior Remy Martin now ready to take the next step of his basketball career
  • Coach Bobby Hurley said that he supports the decision of his court general
  • James Harden is the only player from AZ State that is in the NBA right now

Add another explosive guard to the pool of the NBA Draft hopefuls.

Third-year Arizona State University guard Remy Martin will forego his remaining year and declared for the 2020 NBA Draft. From being a spark off the bench, Martin has become one of the most effective players as the starting playmaker for the Sun Devils.

On a social media post by Jeff Goodman of The Stadium, the 21-year old scorer said that he is ready to take the next step of his basketball career by going pro. “Starting from a young age, I have worked towards the opportunity to play in the NBA and I have now decided to take another step into making my dream a reality,” said the six-foot guard.

The Sun Devils junior consistently produced bigger numbers each year since joining Arizona State in 2017. This season, he’s averaging 19.1 points, 4.1 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.5 steals for the Sun Devils – he leads the team in points, assists, and steals per ESPN. ASU coach Bobby Hurley said on his social media that he fully supports the decision of his top point guard.

Martin’s declaration carries the hope of the Arizona State community as they are looking to end their seven-game draft drought. Per AZCentral, it was 2013 when an ASU player was drafted in the NBA when the Cleveland Cavaliers picked Carrick Felix with their 33rd pick. However, they have produced one of the players that are consistently in the conversation for the MVP race when the Oklahoma City Thunder used their third overall selection to draft James Harden in 2009.

Martin is also looking to join Utah Jazz’ guard Jordan Clarkson as the only player in the NBA with Filipino lineage, with the former’s name is on the list of the pool that will represent the Philippines in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
