  • Pau Gasol knows chances of continuing career are not looking good
  • Gasol will not play for the sake of making history
  • Gasol knows he is in no position to make demands

Pau Gasol had high hopes of playing at least one more season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

However, all that vanished in an instant when the club opted to re-sign Quin Cook to fill their last roster spot.

Moving forward, the two-time champion is aware that he has limited options as far as continuing his basketball career is concerned.

Gasol admits he was keen on making a comeback and a rare chance to tandem with his brother Marc Gasol with the Lakers. However, it was something he had no control over.

The Spaniard gave his take when he talked with Zach Lowe of ESPN.

“There is meaning and history there,” Gasol said. “I’m not going to lie. It would be very special, and now that my brother [Marc] is there, even more special. But I’m not in a position now to be very demanding. I don’t have 10 offers on the table.”

Gasol is starting to realize that the only chance of making a return to the NBA is if he accepts a backup role.

Though Gasol prefers to play for a squad where he would be needed and be put to good use, he is not suiting up for the sake of experiencing a proper send-off.

“I want the opportunity to contribute — to feel needed,” Gasol said. “Not just to be there. That’s not who I am. I want to enjoy it, and players usually enjoy playing.”

The six-time All-Star last saw action with the Milwaukee Bucks. He played only three games and missed the rest of the season due to an ankle injury.

Gasol was signed by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2019 but never got to see a minute on the court. He was eventually waived and no franchise took a chance on him since then.

There is a small window of hope for Gasol, but only if the Lakers find the need to add him. However, it may be nothing more than to give him a piece of history.
