A newborn baby boy dumped in the trash can of an airplane was found by ground airport staff in Mauritius while conducting a routine inspection. The infant was found covered in blood-soaked toilet paper. Investigators arrested a woman, suspected to be the baby’s mother.

The incident took place aboard an Air Mauritius aircraft that took off from Madagascar and arrived at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius on Jan. 1, according to BBC.

The abandoned baby boy was rushed to a public hospital for treatment, reported NDTV.

A 20-year-old Malagasy woman, suspected to have left her child behind in the toilet, was questioned and, while she initially denied the baby was her son, a medical examination determined the woman had just given birth.

The woman was also taken to the hospital where cops kept a watch over her as she received medical attention.

The young mother had arrived in Mauritius on a two-year work permit. She is likely to undergo further questioning and may face charges in connection with child abandonment. According to NY Daily News, both the mother and child are in good health.

A similar incident took place last week after a newborn baby was abandoned with a note that appeared to be from the baby’s family. An Alaska-based woman found the infant in a cardboard box left at the intersection of Dolphin Way and Chena Point Avenue on New Year’s Eve. The note read: “I was born today on December 31, 2021 (at) 6 a.m. I was born 12 weeks premature… My parents and grandparents don’t have food or money to raise me. They never wanted to do this to me. Please take me and find me a loving family," the note added. "My parents are begging whoever finds me. My name is Teshawn."
