A newborn has been named after a policewoman who went out of her way to ensure safe delivery in a cab on Oct. 7.

The female cop, L/Cpl Komathi Narayan was on duty when a pregnant Indonesian woman approached her for help. Sensing the panicked woman, who was already experiencing contractions, Narayan immediately got her into a taxi.

The 27-year-old policewoman decided to accompany her to the hospital. The woman, however, gave birth mid-way with Narayan and the cab driver assisting her.

The baby has been named Rizvi Sardi Mathi-Varna. The parents said Narayan deserved it for the kindness and bravery she showcased.

Both Lance Corporal Komathi and the taxi driver Wong Kok Loong were recognized for their gesture. They were awarded certificates of appreciation and plaques from Cheras police chief ACP Mohamed Mokshein Mohamed Zon at a ceremony held on Oct. 21.

"I just could not bear to see anything go wrong," Narayan told theSun. "I would never have been able to live with that. That is why I had to do something."

"Previously, I have ferried accident victims to hospitals," the driver said. "How can I simply drive away when people are in need of help?"

He praised Komathi, calling her 'brave.' "There was already a passenger in my taxi when she approached me but after she told him it was an emergency, he stepped out," Wong said.

A picture shared by the Malaysian Police on their Facebook page shows Narayan and the new mother at the hospital, holding the newborn baby she had helped deliver.
