Nike Inc.(NYSE:NKE) designer Tinker Hatfield has confirmed that the company plans to make the self-tying shoes featured in the “Back to the Future Part II” movie a reality soon.

According to Sole Collector, a magazine that features sneakers, Nike will release the iconic "power laces" in 2015. In an interview, Hatfield told the magazine: “Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!”

The sneakers featuring the so-called “power laces” were made famous by Michael J. Fox’s character Marty McFly in the 1989 film.

The announcement comes three years after Nike unveiled, in 2011, a replica of the sneakers worn by McFly. Revenues from the sneakers' sales went directly to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease. According to reports, a total of 1,500 pairs were produced and auctioned, raising nearly $6 million for the foundation.

The only thing that had been missing in the shoes, called the Nike Air Mag, was the self-tying power laces, which allowed McFly to simply push a button and have his sneakers tie themselves. However, the designer did not reveal whether the laces would be released as a part of Air Mag’s line-up or as part of an all-new line of sneakers featuring the technology.

Casey Chan, a colleague of Gizmodo's Robert Sorokanich, explained in 2011 that the original 2011 Nike Air Mag features “an upper part construction of reinforced mesh and an outer sole lined with LED panels that’ll light up just like all futuristic shoes imagined in the 80′s should.” He said that it was rechargeable and would remain lit for five hours.

“It’s pretty much the exact replica of the pair of shoes Marty McFly famously wore with a few slight tweaks to add more support and comfort,” Chan reportedly added. “They’re just a pair of shoes, yes, but they might as well be Doc Brown and a DeLorean with a Flux Capacitor—I feel like a kid all over again. I can’t wait to put them on.”
