Dayton Police Department detective Jorge Del Rio was shot twice in the face during a drug raid on Monday. He is currently in critical condition.

The 30-year veteran of the force was part of the Drug Enforcement Administration task force that conducted a drug-related search warrant at a Dayton residence around 7 p.m when he was critically shot in the face and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The department reported that the bullets “penetrated deep” and that Del Rio is in a “grave” condition and was placed under advanced life-support.

NY Daily News reported that Del Rio continued to recover on Tuesday.

The alleged shooter, Nathan Goddard was charged with felonious assault on an agent.

Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said that there were no one else was injured during the incident.

"Today is a very difficult day for the Dayton Police Department and our federal partners," Biehl said. "As we move forward tonight, please keep this officer, his family, our department, the DEA and the entire community in your thoughts, prayers and care."

ABC News reported that according to Biehl, the drug raid turned up with three weapons, each with 30-round magazines, large amounts of suspected fentanyl, marijuana and cash.

Aside from Goddard, two other suspects were arrested on federal drug conspiracy charges.
