Tree of Life
"The Tree of Life" was unexpectedly revived with an Oscar nomination for Best Picture and Best Director. Jessica Chastain and Brad Pitt were also nominated, for "The Help" and "Moneyball," respectively. Reuters

The 2012 Academy Awards nominations were announced this morning, with Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close taking an unexpected slot in the Best Picture nominee list. Max Von Sydow also got a Supporting Actor nod for his role in the 9/11 melodrama -- perhaps taking a spot most thought was reserved for Albert Brooks.

Other surprises were a Best Picture and Best Director nod for Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. Bridesmaids lived up to its longshot expectations with a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Melissa McCarthy and an Original Screenplay nomination for Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo.

Here is a full list of the nominees announced this morning, along with the nominations for the Documentary category (both Project Nim and Bill Cunningham: New York were snubbed.) Click here for a detailed list.
