In a horrific incident in the Indian state of Odisha, a man has been brutally murdered and chopped into seven pieces by his own relatives.

Police arrested Arjun Majhi and five other men for killing Durga Majhi, who had been "ostracized" by his relatives for the last 10 years after falling in love with a girl from another caste, said a report by Times Now News.

The incident happened on Feb. 28. Arjun and Durga were drinking alcohol together on the bank of a river in the village. They got into a heated argument, following which an enraged Arjun strangled his cousin and slit his throat.

Arjun then sought the help of his relatives to cut it into seven pieces. He later dumped the body parts into a river. They also burnt Durga's clothes before disposing of his remains, reported The New Indian Express.

Police said the crime came to light after the body parts were spotted floating in the river on March 3. Police launched an investigation and the victim's relatives were arrested on March 14. However, the police are yet to find the torso of the victim.

According to senior police officer Sagarika Nath, Durga stayed at the Chitabhanga village for the last 10 years after being ostracized by his relatives for being in a relationship with a woman from a different caste. The woman told police that the murder had been the result of the animosity the family bore due to their relationship.

In a similar incident last week, a 21-year-old man in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh beheaded his sister's husband because he didn't approve of their relationship. Dheeraj alias Monto Shukla was walking to the police station carrying a sack with the victim's severed in it when he was intercepted and arrested. Upon hearing the news, his 19-year-old sister committed suicide.
