A couple in India has been arrested for murdering their 21-year-old daughter and dumping the burnt corpse in a canal.

The parents suspected their daughter was in a romantic relationship after finding pregnancy test kits with her. They strangled her to death and dumped the body with the help of their two relatives, police said Wednesday.

The gruesome incident happened in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Police received a complaint from the woman's parents, Naresh and Shobha Devi, on Feb.3, saying their daughter was missing. Cops found the woman's mutilated body in a canal Tuesday, The Times of India reported.

"To hide the identity, they poured battery acid on the body. Naresh's two brothers Gulab and Ramesh also helped them in hiding the body," said Brijesh Kumar Srivastava, an investigating officer.

Naresh was reportedly upset with his daughter as he suspected her of having a relationship. He told investigators that she used to talk to many boys on her phone, Tribune India reported.

"Some pregnancy test kits were also found from her due to which Naresh suspected that his daughter had a relationship with some boy and was angry over this," the officer added.

Cops have taken into custody Gulab and Ramesh, along with the couple. The charges issued against them remain unclear.

In a similar incident a few months back, a man in India fatally shot his daughter after she told him she was pregnant. The 21-year-old daughter reportedly lied to her parents about her pregnancy to pressure them into accepting her marriage to a man from a different caste. However, the suspect, identified as Nitesh Kumar Yadav, shot her twice in the chest with his licensed revolver. He then stuffed her body into a suitcase and threw it on a highway. An autopsy later revealed the woman was not pregnant. Police registered a case against both her parents.
