KEY POINTS

  • Sony hasn't announced PlayStation 5 reveal dates yet
  • The game company won't be joining E3 2020, but might hold an event soon
  • Several sources claim that Sony might reveal the PS5 next month

Sony has repeatedly teased fans about its upcoming console, the PlayStation 5. Some execs revealed that it will feature specs that are way better than those of the PlayStation 4, and is capable of giving players a totally immersive gaming experience that's way ahead of its predecessors.

Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President, teased that while PS4 architect Mark Cerny has already revealed some of the PS5's new specs, the company hasn't actually revealed what sets the upcoming console apart from its older brothers. In other words, there's more to the PlayStation 5 than what fans all over the world know about it.

Reveal time

So, when will Sony reveal the new console? For one, it definitely won't be shown duri ng E3. The game company said it won't join the annual event because, after a “thorough evaluation,” it did “not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.”

Several reports, however, seemed to indicate that the PS5 will be revealed next month, February. First, BGR reported that Patrick Klepek, from Waypoint, hinted that there's “a lot of Sony stuff next month for sure” during a new episode of Waypoint Radio.

Second, Mike Futter, via a tweet, revealed that Sony won't be hosting this year's Destination PlayStation event. Instead, the closed event, meant to gather publishers and retailers, will be hosted by a retailer.

Third, David Jaffe, a developer who worked on “God of War” and “Twisted Metal,” tweeted, among other things, that the “PS5 reveal is less than 4 weeks away,” BGR reported.

What it features

The reveal date, as hinted by the above reports, seems to indicate that Sony itself is working to bring the PS5 to the gaming public this year. What can fans expect from the new console? Here are a few possibilities:

  • New and more powerful innards

Cerny said the PS5 will be powered by third-gen AMD Ryzen chips with eight 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture cores. A recent leak, though unconfirmed, indicated that the CPU will be backed by a GPU that features 36 active Navi compute units clocking at 2000MHz, which translates to 9.2 TFLOPs of processing power.

Cerny also said the PS5 will use solid-state drives which will allow for faster loading times. He also indicated that the upcoming console will feature 8K resolution.

  • A new controller

A patent reveals that Sony is working on a new DualShock controller with new buttons at the back.

  • An appealing price

Cerny promised that the PS5 will have an “appealing” price considering its high-end specs and features. The actual price is yet to be announced, though.
