KEY POINTS

  • Emily Mitchell, a parenting blogger, died of pulmonary embolism
  • She and her husband were expecting their fifth child
  • She was having her breakfast when she became unresponsive and passed away

The death of blogger and Instagram influencer Emily Mitchell, who died just three days ahead of Christmas, had shocked her millions of fans and tributes were pouring in for the hugely popular social media star. A medical examination has recently revealed the cause of her death.

Emily, who is best known for her Instagram page The Hidden Way, was a lifestyle and parenting blogger. She was 16 weeks pregnant with her fifth child when she passed away on Dec. 22, 2020.

Despite prompt attention from her family and medical personnel, she did not survive. A fundraising page that was set up for the Mitchell family informed that Emily was “having her morning coffee and toast when she suddenly became unresponsive.” At the time, the doctors were still trying to determine the cause of death.

The GoFundMe page for the family posted an update Tuesday announcing the cause of Emily’s death. The state Medical Examiners Office found out that the 36-year-old Rhode Island-native died of pulmonary embolism.

Pulmonary Embolism is a medical condition of the lungs causing a blockage in the pulmonary arteries. It is caused by blood clots traveling to the lungs from veins located in the other parts of the body. While the condition is treatable, it can be life-threatening when left undiagnosed and untreated.

“Although it is challenging to wrap our heads around how this could have happened, we know all first responders and medical personnel did everything they could to help, and therefore we are certain that it was simply her time; the Lord was calling her home,” a statement on the funding page read.

The blogger is survived by her husband Joseph Mitchell and their four children -- Finn, Isla, Eden and Luna. Emily’s Instagram page has 176k followers and 567 posts. Through her social media page, the blogger talked about farmhouse living and homeschooling her four children.

On Nov. 20, 2020, she shared the news about her fifth pregnancy with her followers. And in another post, she shared that they were planning a fifth c-section for their unborn baby they wanted to name Joey.

“YOU are no less a mother if you needed emergency medical intervention, had a planned c-section, or an epidural. You aren’t a ‘better’ mother if you had a home birth or unmedicated vaginal birth,” Emily wrote on her last Instagram blog on Dec. 9, 2020.
