When Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in 2018, he thought she would receive a warm welcome from the royal family. However, since their wedding, the Duke of Sussex feels like the prestigious family failed to consider his wife’s feelings.

After the couple tied the knot, the British tabloids began criticizing the former “Suits” actress. The negative press began to take an emotional toll on the couple’s life and made them reconsider their place in the royal family.

A source told Us Weekly that Meghan wasn’t prepared for the cold treatment she received from Harry’s family. “Meghan knew life as a royal wouldn’t be easy,” the insider revealed.

“But nothing prepared her for the constant criticism and drama and backstabbing that goes on behind palace doors.”

Prince Harry was also disappointed with Meghan’s experience while living in the UK. “To say he’s upset about the way the royals and the U.K. press have treated Meghan is an understatement,” the source tells Us.

Meghan and Harry announced their plans to step back from their royal duties last Wednesday. “We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” the statement read.

“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”

On Monday, Queen Elizabeth met with senior royals to discuss the couple’s future. Following the summit, the monarch released a statement supporting the couple’s wishes.

“It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK,” the statement read.

“These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”
