  • Prince Philip felt Prince Harry abdicated his role in the monarchy just like Edward VIII, according to Ingrid Seward
  • Royal biographer Anna Pasternak said Wallis Simpson was a "convenient scapegoat" who took the heat for Edward VIII's abdication
  • Meghan Markle was criticized by many people when she and Prince Harry decided to step down from their royal duties

Prince Philip allegedly felt that Prince Harry was following in Edward VIII's footsteps when he chose his ladylove over the monarchy, a book has claimed.

Prince Philip was dedicated to his duties, just like his wife, Queen Elizabeth II. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were more dedicated to their family than their service to the monarchy. His love for his wife was reportedly likened by the late Duke of Edinburgh to Edward VIII's feelings for Wallis Simpson. Prince Philip allegedly felt that Markle and Simpson, who were both divorced and Americans, had similarities with how they won the hearts of their royal husbands.

"For Philip, whose entire existence has been based on a devotion to duty, it appeared that his grandson had abdicated his [position] for the sake of his marriage to an American divorcee in much the same way as Edward VIII gave up his crown to marry Wallis Simpson in 1936," Ingrid Seward wrote in her book "Prince Philip Revealed."

Royal biographer Anna Pasternak described Simpson as "a convenient scapegoat [who] took the rap for the abdication" in People's "Royal's" special fall edition. The same happened to Markle because many blamed her after the Duke of Sussex decided to step back from his royal duties alongside her, Marie Claire reported.

"As far as he was concerned, [Edward] could not live without her and could not see that she might not be able to live with the consequences of his single-mindedness," Pasternak wrote in "American Duchess: The Real Wallis Simpson." "Being blamed in perpetuity for stealing a beloved, popular king from his throne and almost destroying the British monarchy would prove to be a lifelong annihilating burden that Wallis was forced to bear."

Earlier this year, Prince Harry and Markle sat down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey where they discussed their decision to leave the royal family. Prince William's brother explained that their exit was due to a "lack of support and lack of understanding."

The host asked Prince Harry if they left the royal family due to the U.K. press or because they were not getting enough support from the firm. The Duke of Sussex said "both."

Prince Harry also said that he would never blindside his grandmother and added that his dad, Prince Charles, stopped taking his calls. He also alleged that Prince Charles and Prince William were trapped in the institution.

"If you'd had the support, you would still be there," Winfrey asked him.

"Without a question," Prince Harry said.

An unnamed source said Prince Charles and Prince Harry were already on speaking terms after the controversial interview. However, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not spending the holidays with the royal family on their first Christmas without Prince Philip.

The Duke of Edinburgh passed away in April.
