Prince William was recently photographed on his way to the royal family’s Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace.

In the snap, it was revealed that he drove his wife, Kate Middleton, and two older children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. According to InStyle, even though Prince William looked as though they were having a blast in the car, they may have actually broken royal protocol.

Prince William, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte are all heirs to the throne, which means that they are not allowed to travel together in case of an accident. This rule applies to all modes of transportation and not just when traveling by plane.

Royal etiquette expert Alexandra Messervy of the English Manner told the publication that the royal protocol is more strictly followed when royals are traveling by plane. However, the members of the British clan still need to ask for Queen Elizabeth II’s permission if heirs to the throne wish to travel together in one car.

“Nowadays, it would appear that traveling together by car doesn’t carry the same issue as by plane, but they will, of course, have security police protection. But I suppose they believe that things are relatively safe now,” she said.

However, the royal expert said that the police protection would not be of great help in case an accident occurs.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that Prince William broke the royal protocol. In the past, he traveled to Australia with Prince George in the same plane. They were also joined by Middleton at that time. When the younger heirs to the throne turn 12, the royal protocol for traveling separately from their parents should be followed. But the Queen may still give the family her approval and allow the heirs to the throne to travel together.

In related news, Her Majesty’s Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace was a huge success. It was attended by the majority of the members of the royal family except for Camilla Parker Bowles, who was sick. Princess Eugenie also skipped the occasion because her husband, Jack Brooksbank, was feeling under the weather.
