Prince William and Kate Middleton broke a centuries-old tradition when they tied the knot.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge ended a 350-year-old tradition when they agreed to exchange "I do's" in their royal wedding in 2011. According to Jessica Jayne's "The Duchess of Cambridge: How Kate Middleton Became A Future Queen," Prince William was the first member of the royal family to marry a "commoner" in over three centuries.

"All of those who have lambasted Kate and criticised her for being 'common' ate their words," Jayne wrote (via Express). "Back in the old days, a commoner marrying into royalty may just be a dream but times have changed, Kate would be the first commoner to marry a prince in 350 years."

Although Middleton was branded as a "commoner" she was loved by the British public for her grace, beauty and kindness. In fact, more Brits prefer the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to take over the throne over Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles.

A poll from YouGov in 2017 revealed that 56 percent favored Prince William as the next king while only 13 percent supported Prince Charles. On the other hand, 63 percent approved Middleton as the next queen while only eight percent wanted Camilla.

In a recent poll, it is also revealed that the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex are more liked than the Prince of Wales. However, Prince Charles and Camilla have more detractors.

Twenty percent of the Britons have a negative opinion of the Prince of Wales. On the other hand, 36 percent didn't favor Camilla. Meanwhile, Prince William and Prince Harry only have a seven percent negative rating.

In related news, Middleton reportedly adopted a new fashion style to distinguish herself from her sister-in-law Meghan Markle. Lately, the Duchess of Cambridge is photographed using a headband.

"This is definitely a more regal style that Kate is wearing. The style of the headbands are very similar to a tiara but can be worn on most royal engagements," stylist Rochelle White told Femail.

"I think Kate could be trying to distinguish herself from Meghan. They have been compared a lot recently in regards to their fashion choices, styles and colour palettes."
