Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just announced that they won’t be celebrating the holidays with Queen Elizabeth and the royal family in Sandringham.

Since she got engaged to Prince Harry in 2017, this year will be the first Christmas that Markle will celebrate with her son and husband in the United States. In their announcement, it was revealed that the Sussexes are simply following the precedent of the other members of the British clan.

While speaking with Express, royal expert Marlene Koenig said that Prince William and Kate Middleton also opted to celebrate the holidays with the Duchess of Cambridge’s family twice since they tied the knot in 2011. After their decision was announced, the Cambridges weren’t criticized for wanting to spend Christmas with the future Queen’s side of the family.

However, when it was the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s time, they were criticized by the press.

“A certain element of the press is going to find fault with everything they do. The Cambridges have spent Christmas twice since they’ve been married to the Middletons, so what is wrong with Meghan and Harry spending Christmas with her mother?” Koenig said.

In the royal couple’s announcement, it was also revealed that the Queen has allowed Prince Harry and Markle to celebrate Christmas away from the royal family this year. As such, Koenig said that if Her Majesty is fine with the royal couple’s decision so should everyone else.

Meanwhile, royal expert Angela Levin told Sky News that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision weren’t at all surprising. After all, the “Suits” alum has also dropped some obvious signs that she wanted to spend some time away from the royal family.

“It’s sort of been coming. If your wife feels that she’s existing and not living, she’s unhappy and you are going through a difficult patch as well… Perhaps one of the last things you want to do is go somewhere in the UK which is bleak and cold with a whole load of family,” Levin said.
