Princess Diana and Prince Charles were enjoying a better connection before the Princess of Wales died because they had already moved past the ugly stage of their relationship.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles had a fairytale wedding. But according to experts, they had an unhappy marriage. In fact, their union ended in divorce, with the late Princess of Wales doing an infamous Panorama interview saying their relationship didn't work because "there were three of us in this marriage" implying about Prince Charles and Camilla Parker's affair. But things were better between the exes before the car crash accident that killed Prince William and Prince Harry's mom.

"I think they were finally coming to find a common ground. It had been very difficult, very acrimonious. I think just before she died she had really found her calling. She was excited for the future. She’d let go of the past," CNN royal correspondent Victoria Arbiter told Us Weekly in an episode of "Royally Us.”

"Of course there were the still wobbles because it’s very difficult to coparent when you’re divorced and even more so on a public platform, but I think they had moved beyond the really ugly stage of that relationship and they were embracing what the future had in store for both of them,” she added.

Arbiter also mentioned the CNN series "The Windsors: Inside the Royal Dynasty," which took a closer look at the Prince and Princess of Wales' marriage. For her, the documentary "cuts through the drama, the soap opera nature and the salacious news headlines."

Arbiter also singled out the moment in the documentary when Prince Charles went to Paris to bring his ex-wife’s remains back home following the accident. The heir apparent was devastated and was very affected with the death of his sons' mom.

"They were officially divorced, but he did still love her. She was the mother of his children," Arbiter said.

"I think they probably had matured. They let go of their ugliness and I think that the future was looking promising.”

In related news, Prince Harry and Prince William issued a rare joint statement days before Princess Diana’s 23rd death anniversary last month. The royal siblings announced that Princess Diana's statue, which they commissioned in 2017 for her 20th death anniversary, will be installed at the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace on July 1, 2021 to mark her 60th birthday.
