Princess Diana’s death in 1997 was first revealed to an official, but it is not Queen Elizabeth II.

According to Reader’s Digest, at around 1:45 a.m., former British ambassador to France Michael Jay was alerted of the accident involving Princess Diana and her then-boyfriend, Dodi Al Fayed.

Jay wasn’t aware that the Princess of Wales was in Paris at that time, but after receiving the call, he and his wife rushed to the hospital to check on the mom of two. Right after he was notified of the accident, he phoned the Queen’s private secretary Robin Janvrin.

At around 4 a.m. on Aug 31, Princess Diana was pronounced dead. Her shocking demise was mourned by the entire world. Prior to her death, Princess Diana faced a huge ordeal with regards to her marriage to Prince Charles. After 11 years, the ex-couple announced their separation.

In 1995, Princess Diana told Martin Bashir during their Panorama interview that there was three of them in her marriage. Prince Charles had an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles while he was still married to Princess Diana. One year after the interview, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ divorce were finalized.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage was a tumultuous one. In the documentary “Prince William: Royalty In My Family,” it was revealed that Prince Charles brought his books and fishing gear during his honeymoon with Princess Diana.

“The Princess’ fairytale wedding did not necessarily translate into a fairytale honeymoon,” the narrator said.

During the final days of their honeymoon, the royal couple attended a photocall in Scotland. During the interview, Princess Diana said that she would highly recommend marriage to everyone. However, as royal fans now know, Prince William and Prince Harry’s parents’ marriage was far from perfect.

Following Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s divorce in 1996, the future king continued dating Camilla. The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall tied the knot in a civil ceremony in 2005. They are happily married to each other, but they do not have biological kids with each other.
