KEY POINTS

  • Protesters marched on Fifth Avenue, NY on Thursday to demand justice for victims of police brutality
  • A number of them brought red paint and left "trails of blood" on the streets
  • Demonstrators shouted profanities and also called for defunding the police

Around 100 protesters marched down Fifth Avenue in New York on Thursday to demand justice for victims of police brutality and for such practice to be stopped. Some of the protesters brought cans of red paint, which they then poured on the road, leaving a trail of what looked like blood on the street.

Revolutionary Art

While most people do not agree with their actions of staining the street with paint, a protester identified only as Lenz, said that what they did is an art, and it is supposed to be revolutionary. He also spray-painted the initials “BLM,” which stood for Black Lives Matter, on a road sign near The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was promptly arrested, and while being taken away, many protesters chanted, “Let him go!”

In a subsequent interview with The Post, Lenz noted that he just tagged the sign because he believed that black lives matter, and so do black artists, and described it with, “It felt really, really good.” Police authorities say charges against the black street artist are pending as of Thursday evening.

Spilling Red Paint

The protest billed on an online flyer as “Blood on the Streets... March and visual representation for black lives,” started on 110th and 5th Avenue approximately 1 p.m. One of the organizers, Shelby Brown, told The Post that she wanted demonstrators to spill red paint on the road because “they are not taking notice.” She added that no one should ignore what is clearly happening in the country.

Despite their exhortations to bring red paint, only a few people were able to do so. Some of them allowed the paint to drip on the street while others used spray cans or water bottles filled with paint. Two of the protesters lugged several buckets while at least one demonstrator was seen with a small tube of acrylic or oil paint.

Chanting Profanities

Demonstrators chanted profanities like “F--- the police,” while others shouted, “Defund the NYPD” as they marched along the street. Over two dozen police officers in cars and on bikes flanked the protesters. When they were in front of the Trump Tower, which was also located on 5th Avenue, most of the protesters stopped and pointed their fingers to the police officers while shouting “Shame!”

Others jeered the police to “put your mask on.” The group then proceeded to move downtown and headed toward Wall Street. One of the protesters was seen carrying a placard that read, “The NYPD has blood on its hands.” It was immediately unclear how much damage did the display caused as the Department of Transportation was not able to return The Post’s request for comment.
