Queen Elizabeth II is very close to her grandson, Prince William.

The Queen was reportedly not a “warm and cozy” mom to Prince Charles. The Prince of Wales apparently grew up in the care of his nannies and staff because Her Majesty was very busy with her royal duties. As a result, the two didn’t have that close of a mother-and-son relationship.

However, the Queen is reportedly very different when it comes to her interactions with Prince William. Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Cambridge are very close and often spent time together. In fact, when he was a teenager and was still studying in Eton, the monarch would send for him for weekly private meetings at Windsor Castle where they would open the state boxes together.

Queen Elizabeth II would guide Prince William through the papers. According to royal historian Robert Lacey, it was the prince’s constitutional education.

Kate Nicholl revealed in her 2010 book “William and Harry” that the Queen saw Princess Diana’s sensitivity in her grandson. According to Elizabeth Anson, Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin, Her Majesty “desperately wanted to help William.”

In addition, she wanted to make up for her shortcomings with Prince Charles because the Prince of Wales complained about their relationship.

“The Queen was determined to learn from the mistakes of her past,” Nicholl wrote. “Charles had complained that he had never shared a close bond with his mother. When he was growing up they saw very little of each other, and in times of need he had turned to his beloved grandmother for advice and support.”

Prince Charles was indeed closer to the Queen Mother than Queen Elizabeth II. There was even a time when the Queen Mother got into an argument with Prince Philip because she didn’t support the Duke of Edinburgh’s plan to send Prince Charles to Gordonstoun, the 97-year-old’s old school in Scotland. Reports have it that Prince Philip wanted to toughen up “sensitive” Prince Charles.

In the end, Prince Philip still sent Prince Charles to Gordonstoun. The Prince of Wales would often escape from his classes to stay with grandmother and he would often beg her to take him out of school.

Prince Charles has a tricky relationship with his own sons too. In fact, Prince Harry is closer to his big brother, Prince William. The Duke of Sussex also listens to Queen Elizabeth II more than the Prince of Wales.
