Four children were hospitalized after they were bitten by a rabid dog in Multan, a city in Pakistan, on Saturday.

The four unidentified children were playing outside a house when the canine attacked and bit them. Paramedics arrived at the scene and administered first aid before the children were transported to a nearby hospital. At the hospital, the children were administered the anti-rabies vaccine.

Speaking to local news network Samaa TV, Dr. Seemin Jamali, the executive director of Jinnah Medical and Postgraduate Centre, said there should be more awareness about rabies.

“If someone is bitten, they should wash the site with water and immediately go to a medical facility where Anti Rabies Vaccination is available,” she said, adding that delaying treatment could result in death.

Dr. Jamali said this in reference to a recent case where a 12-year-old boy in Larkana, Pakistan, died of rabies after he was bitten by a dog. The boy’s parents said they took the boy to two government hospitals, but both of them had run out of anti-rabies vaccination, which resulted in the victim’s death.

Dr. Jamali said the incubation period for the disease is around four weeks after which it cannot be cured. She added that people who come in contact with persons suffering from the disease need to get a preventive vaccine at the earlier.

Meanwhile, the condition of the four children bitten by the dog was not known. It was also unknown if the canine was captured following the attack.
