- Ramos is with Real Madrid since 2005
Manchester City reportedly are keeping an eye on Real Madrid’s situation with Sergio Ramos, whose contract with the Spanish giants is due to end in the summer of 2021 and the 34-year-old player is yet to sign an extension.
Ramos has been free to negotiate with other clubs since Jan. 1 and Manchester City are hoping to sign the Real Madrid skipper as a free agent at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, ESPN reported. However, the International Business Times could not verify the information independently.
The Premier League side is aware that it won’t be an easy deal to crack, but Pep Guardiola is a fan of Ramos and the club is looking to strengthen their defense ahead of the new season. The ESPN report has also stated that even though Ramos will turn 35 in March, Manchester City believe that he’ll be able to perform at the highest level and would be an "interesting" option to provide leadership and experience at the back.
It is understood that Manchester City are ready to meet Ramos’ substantial salary demands, considering the player would join the Etihad side on a free transfer. However, ESPN has also reported that Ramos’ top priority is to renew his contract with Real Madrid and the player has asked for a two-year extension.
The talks between Ramos and Real Madrid began some time back and it is believed that the club are willing to accept his demands, making an exception to their usual one-year policy for players over-30s.
Ramos, who is into his 16th season at Santiago Bernabeu, joined the La Liga champions from Seville ahead of the 2005-06 season. In over a decade representing Real Madrid, Ramos has tasted much success, both as a player and captain, having won five La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies, and four FIFA Club World Cups.
