KEY POINTS

  • The Russian politician was identified as local MP Sergey Mamontov
  • Mamontov did not report the incident to the police or called an ambulance to give the toddler medical attention
  • Mamontov has yet to be detained for running over the six-year-old child

A Russian politician was recently caught on video mowing down a child before driving away and leaving him writhing in pain on the street.

Sergey Mamontov, 67, hit the six-year-old child with his Toyota RAV4 in the Russian town of Tatarsk in Novosibirsk Oblast. Mamontov is a wealthy construction business owner and local member of the parliament representing Russian President Vladimir Putin's party in the region.

In horrific footage shared by Belarusian media outlet NEXTA on Twitter, the child can be seen walking along a side road when Mamontov turned the corner and hit him, running him over with his car. The Russian politician exited his vehicle and appeared to speak to the toddler, who was rolling on the floor in pain, before going back to his car and driving away.

Mamontov did not report the incident to the police. He also failed to call for medical help, the Kyiv Post reported. The child was rushed to the hospital by a neighbor who saw the incident from his window. The toddler was admitted to intensive care after suffering a broken hip and head injury.

The Russian politician, who was found to be sober during the incident, later turned himself in at a police station after his car was put on the wanted list. He has not yet been detained, according to The Mirror, citing local law enforcement sources.

Yulia Shvets, a senior party official from United Russia, has called for Mamonvtov to be "shamefully" expelled from the party over the incident.

"Someone who crushes a child and leaves him on the road without help can hardly even be called a person in the full sense of the word. He must be punished to the full extent of the law," Shvets said, as quoted by the Kyiv Post. "As for United Russia, it will shamefully expel Mamontov from the party and provide support to the injured boy and his family."

The Novosibirsk Region prosecutor's office and the six-year-old child's father Svetlana Chernomorova, 35, have demanded that a criminal case be opened against Mamontov over the incident.

As of Oct. 31, the child has received stitches to his injuries and is in stable condition.
