COVID-19 has put a damper on July 4th plans all across the country and led to the cancellation of several annual events including family-friendly festivals and fireworks displays. However, in the San Diego area, there are still set to be some shows that residents can watch both outside and inside of their homes.

With COVID-19 cases on the rise in the state of California, many events have been canceled entirely in the state, including in the Southern California city and county roughly 120 miles south of the heavily affected Los Angeles area. While residents may need to adapt to a socially distanced plan when it comes to their Independence Day celebrations though, there are still ways to enjoy some of the dazzling pyrotechnic displays that have often lit up the skies around the area.

Check out what will be happening around San Diego (all times PT) below.

San Diego:

  • Big Bay Boom: The most popular show in San Diego has been canceled for this year, but a TV special will air in its place on multiple networks, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The “2020 Big Bay Boom Fourth of July TV Special” will feature both “Big Bay Boom: Salute to Heroes,” which looks at the 20-year history of the spectacular, as well as “Big Bay Boom Encore,” a 24-minute fireworks spectacular showcasing the best moments for the past five years of shows.
  • Sea World San Diego: Like other Southern California theme parks, Sea World is closed, which means the fireworks show is canceled. This also applies to the annual show that is usually shown at Legoland as well, as that park has confirmed they will not reopen until August 1 at the earliest.

City of El Cajon:

While fireworks are still scheduled to be set off from Kennedy Park beginning at 9 p.m., the park itself is closed and public gathering nearby is prohibited.

Lake Poway Fireworks in Poway, California:

While parking passes allowing access to the park and grounds for the day which guaranteed limited entry to comply with guidelines are sold out, those interested in viewing the fireworks, beginning at 9 p.m. over Lake Poway can still do so by safely parking nearby and staying in vehicles. Santee Salutes:

While live fireworks are still set to go off at 9 p.m., locations for the fireworks are closed to the public and residents are encouraged to watch the show from their own homes and yards. Those interested can also stream a virtual show beginning at 7:20 p.m. featuring the 80z All-Stars with a virtual concert and a flag ceremony.

City of Vista Fireworks:

The event at Brengle Terrace Park is only open to those with pre-purchased tickets and no pedestrian traffic will be allowed. The fireworks will begin at 9 p.m.
