Emma’s (Willa Fitzgerald) story could still continue in a third season of “Scream.” MTV

The Lakewood Killer might be behind bars, but that doesn’t mean that MTV’s “Scream” series is over. The Season 2 finale set up a juicy new plotline, that is, if the show gets renewed for a third season.

WARNING: Stop reading if you did not watch the “Scream” Season 2 Finale!

“Scream” Season 2 concluded by unmasking Piper’s (Amelia Rose Blaire) accomplice from Season 1. It was revealed that Emma’s (Willa Fitzgerald) boyfriend, Kieran (Amadeus Serafini), was the killer all along.

“Surprise … your boyfriend is banging your crazy half-sister and we’re both about to kill you,” he taunted the teen in episode 12.

Kieran had met Piper while they were both living in Atlanta. Piper, who was the daughter of original Lakewood murderer Brandon James, developed some serious mommy issues after being put up for adoption by Maggie (Tracy Middendorf) as a baby. Kieran, on the other hand, resented his father for leaving him in Atlanta with his mother and step-dad. When the two found out that their parents were in a relationship they decided to move to town to make them look like fools for being unable to stop a killing spree. Their grand finale plan was to kill Kieran’s dad, Sheriff Hudson (Jason Wiles), Emma, and then Maggie. But Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus) ruined their plan by showing up at the lake with a gun in the Season 1 finale.

Although Piper was dead, Kieran decided to finish what they started by picking up the game when Emma returned to town in Season 2. He also decided to torment Audrey as payback for her role in everything.

Audrey and Emma were able to clear their names and aid in the arrest of Kieran. It seemed as if everyone was going to get a happy ending — but then Kieran received a call from inside prison.

“Hello, Kieran,” a mystery caller that sounds like the Brandon James killer says. “Who told you you could wear my mask?”

That’s right — the real Brandon James appears to be back in town! The finale also concluded with Maggie finding a note tacked to the tree where she used to leave Brandon secret notes. The note was stabbed into the tree with a knife and had a bloody mark on it. It was the same letter she had previously left for Brandon about leaving Emma alone.

Earlier in the season viewers learned that Brandon James didn’t die at the lake 20 years prior. He was severely injured, but Maggie got Miguel to help bring him back to his house. Miguel buried the knife that Brandon used to kill all those students and left him on the porch. Maggie assumed that he went into the woods where he succumbed to the woods. However, the finale makes it appear as if he survived.

Brandon was always in love with Maggie, so why would he leave a bloody note and knife stabbed into a tree? And why would he call Kieran in jail? “Scream” fans will have to keep waiting to find out. MTV announced the Season 2 renewal of the series last July at the network’s Television Critics Association presentation, but kept mum about Season 3 this year at the TCA event.

The show definitely declined in viewers. According to TVSeriesFinale.com, Season 1 averaged a 0.34 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 750,000 viewers. Without the Season 2 finale numbers, the second season averaged a 0.19 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 380,000 viewers. The series still has a dedicated fan base though. One viewer even started a Change.org petition urging Netflix to “save” the show.
