Princess Diana is considered a fashion icon, and while the black sheep sweater she used to wear is considered casual attire, the top is one of the most famous items she ever wore.

Although Diana first wore the Warm and Wonderful sweater in the 1980s, it remains iconic to this day. The popularity of the sweater recently prompted a collaboration between the UK designer and the American label Rowing Blazers, The Telegraph reports.

Jack Carlson, the founder of Rowing Blazers, teamed up with Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, the co-designers of Warm and Wonderful knitwear, to release a new version of the black sheep sweater.

The sweater is available for preorder on Rowing Blazers. However, due to overwhelming demand, the item is expected to be delivered sometime between January and February 2021.

The Warm & Wonderful x Rowing Blazers sheep sweater is available for $295 for both men and women. The sweater was available on Selfridges but sold out shortly after its release.

For those who prefer to have an original Warm & Wonderful black sheep sweater, there is one up for auction on eBay for $1,000. However, the sweater has some wear and tear as well as discoloration to some of the white sheep.

Princess Diana knew about the fragility of the sweater all too well, according to Muir. The designer told The Telegraph the late royal adored the sweater so much that when she tore a hole through it, she asked the designers to fix it.

Luckily for her, the designers had something else in mind, which allowed the Princess to have two of the black sheep sweaters in her closet.

“She damaged the first one, we always imagined her enormous engagement ring caught in the threads,” Muir said.

“It was sent back to us with a very charming letter from her secretary, saying how much she loved it and could we mend it. We decided that rather than cobble together the damaged one, we’d make her a perfect new one, which is what we did. Hence the two.”

Although the black sheep sweater is now considered an iconic fashion statement, it is believed that Princess Diana wore the top to express her feelings about being an outsider in the royal family, despite her relationship with Prince Charles.
