KEY POINTS

  • A survey conducted among nearly 4,000 game developers was made in preparation for this year's GDC
  • The survey discovered that a number of developers are already working on new games for next-gen consoles
  • The survey also discovered that among game developers, there's more interest in the PS5 than the Xbox Series X

The Game Developers Conference's organizers, in preparation for the upcoming 2020 GDC that will be held in March 16 to 20 in San Francisco, have conducted a survey and asked nearly 4,000 game developers about several things including what consoles and game systems they are developing games for, what they hope to see this year when it comes to games, and so on.

One of the key findings is that a sizeable number of developers are already working on titles for the upcoming next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Many of these developers saw their games released for previous-gen consoles and systems, including mobile and PC. Here's a quick look at some of the findings.

Developers' games were released on the following platforms last year:

Fifty-four percent of developers said their last game was released on the PC. Forty percent said their last game was released for mobiles, namely iOS and Android. Twenty-four percent said their games were released on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. Twenty-one percent of devs said their games were released for the Xbox One and Xbox One X.

Developers are currently working on titles for the following platforms:

This year, 56 percent of devs are creating games for the PC; 39 percent are creating games for mobile platforms; 25 percent are creating games for the PS4/Pro; and 23 percent are creating games for the Xbox One/X.

Interestingly, 11 percent of developers said they are already creating games for the PlayStation 5. This is a bit more compared to the nine percent of developers who said they are working on games for the Xbox Series X (which was still referred to as the Xbox Scarlett during the time of the survey).

There's more interest in the PS5 than the Xbox Series X

The survey also found that developers are more interested in creating games for the PS5 than the Xbox Series X. Twenty-three percent of developers said the next project they will work on will be meant for the PS5, even surpassing the twenty percent who said they will create new games for the PS4.

Seventeen percent of developers said their next project will be released for the Xbox Series X, while twenty percent said their next project will be for the Xbox One/X.

The GDC organizers discovered a lot of interesting information that could help people predict where the video gaming industry might go. Those who are interested to read the full report can download it from here.
