It looks like Deputy Beck (Tristan Wilds) is ready to expose the corrupt inner workings of the Sheriff’s department in Season 1, episode 8 of “Shots Fired.”

In the trailer for the episode, Ashe (Sanaa Lathan) and Preston (Stephan James) meet up with Beck and give him another chance to tell the truth about the death of Jesse Carr (Jacob Leinbach). “We’ll give you a chance to come clean,” Preston tells Beck in the video.

Ashe and Preston’s meeting with Beck comes after the crime-solving duo unearthed a hidden video from Jesse’s phone in Season 1, episode 7. The clip, which Jesse recorded himself moments immediately before he was killed, opens with Beck approaching the kid’s car. The cop asks the college student if he’s lost. After Jesse says he’s not, he asks Beck why he pulled him over.

“Because you don’t look right,” the police officer replies.

“I didn’t realize it was illegal to in this part of town,” Jesse says. “I came for some fried chicken.”

Despite Jesse’s innocent excuse, Beck still demands for his license and registration. Jesse gets his license and registration, but instead of handing it properly to Beck, the kid intentionally drops them on the ground. Apparently, that makes Beck furious, so he violently pulls Jesse out of his car, then four gunshots are heard.

Although the video doesn’t tell the whole story, it does confirm that Beck lied in his statement. As Ashe pointed out to Sheriff Platt (Will Patton) last episode, Beck pulled Jesse’s door open, which is a pretty glaring detail the deputy didn’t include in his initial statement about the case.

In addition to Jesse’s case, Ashe and Preston also question Beck about Joey Campbell’s (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) shooting. “We believe you know what happened that night Joey was killed,” Preston tells Beck.

But it appears that the cop isn’t telling them anything about the case. Frustrated by Beck’s refusal to participate in the investigation of Joey’s death, Ashe asks him why he is protecting the Sheriff’s department.

Although Pastor Janae (Aisha Hinds) was arrested for Joey’s murder at the end of last episode, Ashe and Preston are clearly not convinced that she’s the perpetrator of the crime. For one, their eyewitness, Cory (Marqus Clae), told them that Arlen Cox (Richard Dreyfuss) was the one who shot Joey dead.

In next week’s episode, as revealed in the synopsis for the hour, Ashe and Preston look into the weapon that Janae allegedly used to kill Joey. In the process, Ashe seemingly talks to Janae’s loyal followers to get information. But as seen in the trailer, it appears that they aren’t really fond of the DOJ investigator.

“Are you one of the or are you one of us?” a supporter of Janae asks Ashe.

“I don’t trust them and I don’t trust you,” replies Ashe.

Meanwhile, tension continues to escalate between the investigators and the Sheriff’s Department, leading to a potentially game-changing altercation. Also, Preston makes a rash decision regarding the Jesse’s case.
