The district attorney is sending a new team to Gate Station to investigate the shootings of Jesse Carr (Jacob Leinbach) and Joey Campbell (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) in “Shots Fired” Season 1, episode 7, titled “Content of their Character.”

Despite the arrival of Ashe (Sanaa Lathan) and Preston’s (Stephan James) apparent replacement, the synopsis for the episode reveals that the young DOJ lawyer remains focused and determined to find the underlying truth.

“They want us to walk away,” Ashe tells Preston in the preview clip for the episode.

“Well, I’m not built like that,” Preston replies. “I don’t think you are either.”

Ashe learned that a new team was prepping to take over her and Preston’s investigation during her meeting with their boss Julian Carroll (Mike Pniewski) and her former partner James Ruiz (Manny Perez) in last week’s Season 1, episode 6.

“I told you both I didn’t want another Ferguson but that’s exactly what it’s starting to look like down there,” a disappointed Julian told Ashe last episode.

“I understand your concern, sir, but the race problems they’ve been having have been festering for decades,” Ashe replied.

“We didn’t send you there to dissect the race problem. We sent you down there to dissect the events of the Jesse Carr shooting,” Ruiz reminded Ashe.

“If we investigate why a fire started, we could say it’s because someone struck a match. But if we understand why the match was lit, we get to the root cause,” Ashe said in defense of how she and Preston have been investigating the shootings. “Isn’t that what we do here?”

Apparently, the riot wasn’t the only thing Julian was concerned with. He also accused Ashe and Preston of making things up about the investigation after Julian learned from Sheriff Platt (Will Patton) that Lieutenant Breeland (Stephen Moyer) found a witness who contradicted Ashe and Preston’s theories regarding a link between the two shootings.

“The Governor [Patricia Eamons] (Helen Hunt) asked for our assistance to prevent a city in her state from being torn apart. Instead, this investigation has caused more division, more distrust and no real tangible evidence,” Ruiz told Ashe, before Julian revealed the news to her that she and Preston only have a week to finish up their investigation.

Unfortunately for the DOJ, sending a new team to investigate the shootings only creates conflicting stories, leaving a witness hanging dangerously in the balance with her testimony of what actually happened the night Joey Campbell died.

Also in the episode, a yet another compromising video of Deputy Beck (Tristan Mack Wilds) surfaces amidst the aftermath of the riots.

In another preview clip for the episode, Ashe and Preston also appear to have brought in Arlen Cox (Richard Dreyfuss) for questioning.

“I know how hard to speak out against injustices, when you’re in the paper,” Preston tells the businessman.

“I think I misjudged you,” replies Arlen, who is one of the suspects in the Joey Campbell shooting.

“Shots Fired” Season 1, episode 7 airs on Wednesday, May 3 at 8 p.m. EDT on FOX.
