A man has been arrested after he allegedly shot his 64-year-old father to death after taking him out for a drive. Police said the accused, Rohit Singh from the Indian city of Meerut, decided to commit the murder, fearing that he may not inherit his father’s property.

The incident came to light Saturday night when passersby noticed the body of a man inside a car in the suburbs, reports The Times Of India. The body was found wrapped in a blanket, and the head rested on a pillow.

Police were alerted, and officers soon identified the deceased as Sukhram Singh. Further investigation revealed that Sukhram went with his elder son Rohit for a ride Saturday, and was never seen again.

"Sukhram’s younger son had died a few years ago. Since then, he had been living with his wife Kusum, daughter Rita and son-in-law Mohit. Rohit used to think that his father will give away all his property to his daughter," a senior police official told The Times Of India.

According to the family members, Rohit was not in touch with his parents for a long time. His "bad habits and poor temperament" had reportedly alienated him from his family.

However, when he approached them Saturday after a long time, his parents were elated to see him. They believed he had changed for good.

"Then he urged his father to accompany him for a drive. Sukhram agreed to go along, and the two set out together. But it turned out to be Sukhram's last ride," the officer added.

Sukhram had a gunshot wound to the chest and head injuries. Police believe the man suffered blows to his head before being shot by his son.

Police have charged Rohit with murder. Officers believe he was helped by another relative, identified as Devendra, to commit the murder. Both of them are absconding, and a search is on.

Last month, a 61-year-old man in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was allegedly beaten to death by his sons over a property dispute. The incident occurred on Father's Day. Police said the victim, a retired railway employee, was allegedly taken from his home by his two sons before being beaten to death.
