Japanese console maker Sony recently announced the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment. In Sony’s attempt to introduce DualShock 4 Pro experience to competitive gamers, the small device introduces extra functionality to the existing PlayStation 4 gamepads. Although Sony is not yet offering a pro-controller, this mini-OLED display add-on could be the next best thing.

Unlike Microsoft, Sony has not yet offered PlayStation 4 players a pro-level controller similar to the Elite Series 2 of the Redmond-based tech giant. The closest alternative available would be something like Scuf’s Vantage 2, which comes with back paddles, configurable layouts, and other special trimmings that gamers could find on the pro-level and high-end Xbox controller. While the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment is not the DualShock 4 Pro many gamers are anticipating, it still brings some of these perks to the current setup at a very affordable price point.

Essentially, the new DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment is a small add-on device that could be attached to the bottom or back of the DualShock 4 controller through the use of a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is an audio pass-through a jack that allows gamers to use gaming headset with the new attachment in place, says 9to5toys. Additionally, the small attachment offers a couple of programmable and highly haptic back paddle-esque buttons on each side of the circular OLED display.

These two buttons could be mapped to up to 16 various actions like a circle, triangle, R1, and R2, and offer amazing haptic feedback, Sony states. The OLED screen shows all active configurations, and the three saved button profiles the gamer is using. The small screen doubles as a button but looks like it is only for making assignments or switching between saved profiles.

The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment is a PlayStation developed device that has been tested and approved for use in PlayStation 4 as well as in PlayStation VR titles, according to Sony. The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment from Sony is scheduled to arrive on Jan. 23, 2020 at a retail price of $29.99
