  • New code found on Sony's website indicates PlayStation 5 sales will be limited to one per customer ahead of preorders going live
  • Sony has ramped up production of its newest console, reportedly ordering 50% more than what was planned
  • Sony is concerned about meeting production needs amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which produced shortages of Nintendo Switch consoles

As Sony ramps up production of the PlayStation 5 ahead of its fall release, hacked code found on Sony's website indicated sales on the new console will be limited to one per-customer.

“You can only purchase one version of the PS5 Console: Disc or Digital,” the code said. “You have already added one PS5 console to your cart.”

This follows a report last week that Sony was ramping up production to meet potential demand. Sony reportedly ordered 50% more consoles than what it had originally planned to ship, leading some outlets to boost their predictions for the number of units Sony could ship before the end of the year.

Sony originally said it was hoping to ship 6 million units, but Bloomberg’s Japan edition reported it could ship as many as 10 million by the end of 2020.

The ramp-up in production follows months of uncertainty around the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X’s availability due to coronavirus. General game sales were up in 2020 due to the pandemic, though most of these sales were seen in the digital space. Shortages were also seen in the consoles space as factories across Asia where most consoles are produced had to shut down due to the pandemic.

Nintendo felt this the hardest as Switch shortages were reported in North American and Japan due to high demand and reduced production.

Sony apparently is trying to avoid a similar situation when their newest console releases ahead of the holiday season.
