KEY POINTS

  • Sony Xperia 1 II will be available in Japan this May
  • Sony Xperia 1 II global availability yet to be announced
  • All eyes will be on the camera system of the Sony Xperia 1 II

The Sony Xperia 1 II will be making its debut in Japan soon, a device that costs a cool $1,243. Japanese carrier KDDI made the announcement and rival retailer NTT Docomo is expected to follow soon. But the big question is when will the device make its global debut? This was originally set to happen by the end of May. However, plans could be altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For now, it will be the consumers over in Japan who will get to see what the new Sony flagship has to offer. The Sony Xperia 1 II set to debut will come with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. Other than that, the new flagship will sport a 6.5-inch 4K OLED capacitive touchscreen (1,644x3840 pixels) display and bank on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, GSM Arena reported.

But the most notable feature that the Sony Xperia 1 II has to offer will be the built-in cameras. The new phone will come with a triple 12 MP camera setup plus a 0.3 MP for added depth. Upfront, the phone will have an 8 MP front-facing shooter. Other notable features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a non-removable 4,000 mAh battery with fast charge capability. The Sony Xperia 1 II will come with Android 10 out of the box according to the Xperia blog.

Sony officially unveiled the Sony Xperia 1 II last February before the COVID-19 pandemic started to break. The new name puts an end to years of Sony relying on models using the X and Z for branding. On the outside, the Sony Xperia 1 II hardly showed any changes aesthetically. The key changes were from within, particularly the new camera system and a 5G ready device, Android Authority reported.

Of the two features, it will be the camera system of the Sony Xperia 1 II that most will be looking at. The company armed previous models with the same high-end shooters but underperformed. However, it appears the latest camera technology is something to look forward to. Pro photographer Nick Didlick showed off what the Sony Xperia 1 II camera system can do in this YouTube video.
