“Spider-Man: Far From Home” had an unexpected connection to “Captain Marvel,” and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige seemingly teased that they might laying the groundwork for something bigger.

[Spoiler Alert: The end of “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is discussed below.]

There is a line early in the film where Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) mentions Kree sleeper cells. Then, in the post-credits scene, it’s revealed that Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) are actually two Skrulls introduced in “Captain Marvel,” Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and Soren (Sharon Blynn). They’re working for Fury while he is somewhere in space with other Skrulls.

Feige hinted that they’re part of something bigger. Fandango asked if the Kree-Skrull conflict will continue into Phase 4, and, as per usual, Feige gave an indirect answer.

“Well, that Kree-Skrull war was a big part of the comics and a big part of the Captain Marvel mythology that we wanted to build into,” he said. “And there’ll be lots of questions like, what was Captain Marvel up to in the 20-plus years between when she flew away at the end of Captain Marvel to when she appears in ‘Endgame’?”

So will the Kree sleeper cells play a role in the “Captain Marvel” sequel? It sounds like fans shouldn’t read too much into it. Feige added that the line about the Kree was actually intended to clue audiences in that something was off about Fury.

“That particular line, though, is one of the handful of Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the film that Maria or Fury say that give an indication that something’s different about them,” he said.

Fans will get some real answers about Phase 4 when Feige announces the next Marvel Studios films this summer. He is expected to make some big reveals in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con on July 20.

“Spider-Man: Far From Home,” directed by Jon Watts, is in theaters now. The cast includes Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau and Marisa Tomei.
