Sony Pictures Animation has tapped three filmmakers for the highly anticipated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” sequel.

The sequel will have Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson sitting on the director’s chairs, Variety exclusively learned from Sony Pictures Monday.

Dos Santos’ directing involvement has long been revealed, but this is the first time for the studio to confirm that he is just one-third of the directing team that’s been working on the project from the start.

“The crew behind the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse set such a ridiculously high bar, and we're humbled to take on the challenge of charting the next chapter in the story of Miles Morales. We can't wait to surprise fans with the wild new adventure we're sending Miles on with his friends, both old and new,” the three filmmakers said in a statement to the media outlet.

Dos Santos is mostly known for his work on “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and the “Voltron” series on Netflix. Powers, who is nominated at this year’s Oscar Awards for “One Night In Miami,” has already made his mark through his well-received film “Soul.” As for Thompson, he was part of the original “Spider-Verse” movie as production designer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The director of the first “Spider-Verse” installment, Peter Ramsey, will still be involved in the project as executive producer, alongside Aditya Sood. Meanwhile, the list of producers includes Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Christina Steinberg, Amy Pascal, Alonzo Ruvalcaba and Avi Arad.

Speaking on the three directors’ joint efforts in making the sequel possible, Lord and Miller said they feel lucky to have Dos Santos, Powers and Thompson on board.

“We are so lucky to have Joaquim, Justin and Kemp on the Spider-Verse team. They are all Super Heroes at what they do and each brings a unique sensibility to the ‘Spider-Verse,’” they said.

“All three of them elevate every project they take on, and they are certainly raising our game. We honestly just like them and want to be their friends and we’re hoping working on this movie together for the next few years will totally make that happen,” they added.

Lord, Miller and David Callaham, who is known for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” are serving as screenwriters of the animation project.

The “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” sequel is expected to hit theaters on Oct. 7, 2022, as per The Wrap.
