A 21-year-old man in India allegedly set his classmate on fire and attempted to kill himself after she rejected him.

The suspect, identified as P. Harshavardhan, checked into a hotel in Visakhapatnam, a port city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, on Nov. 12.

Harshavardhan then called the 20-year-old girl, whom he met while studying at a university in the country's northwestern state of Punjab, and asked her to meet him. He told the unsuspecting girl that he wanted to discuss their "relationship," the Times of India reported.

On Saturday night, the girl met with Harshavardhan and he proposed to her. The victim refused his advances and it made Harshavardhan angry.

In a fit of rage, the suspect doused the girl with an inflammable liquid and set her ablaze. After attacking the girl, Harshavardhan allegedly poured the liquid on himself and attempted to die with her, according to The Hindu.

The couple on fire then opened the door of the room and ran out screaming for help. Both of them were rushed to a nearby hospital. The girl suffered from second-degree burns and has been admitted into the burns ward where she is currently being treated. The accused sustained superficial burns and is undergoing treatment. Both of them are listed in stable condition and are expected to recover, according to the Times of India.

According to the police, the girl had previously met with the boy at the same hotel when he visited the city on Sept. 7. Later, Harshavardhan told the police that he and the girl were in a relationship.

In September, a woman in India allegedly set her husband of 18 years ablaze after an argument over her affair. He ran out and jumped into a drain to save himself. But, the woman's lover, who was inside the couple’s residence during the incident, followed him and dropped a boulder on the victim’s head to make sure that he died. The woman confessed to the killing and said she could no longer withstand the victim's "abuse" against her.
