A newborn, who was buried in a shallow grave by mother, was dug up and eaten by dogs. The 16-year-old Kenyan mother was sentenced to three years in a youth detention center Thursday.

The unidentified teen secretly buried her newborn baby in a grave, minutes after giving birth to the child on Sept.11, 2019. The newborn was eaten by dogs. The girl’s neighbors informed area assistant chief Charo Hinzano about the incident, who in turn reported it to police.

Confirming the incident, Hinzano said, “The girl, who had been pregnant without the knowledge of her parents, gave birth and secretly took the infant to a bush, where she buried it in a shallow grave. The infant’s body was later dug out and eaten by dogs.”

The teen was taken into custody and appeared in court for the first time on Sept. 16 when she denied the charges. However, during the second appearance in court, the teen pleaded guilty to the crime. The court heard that the girl dropped out of school after she became pregnant. The teen told the court that her boyfriend had declined to take responsibility for her pregnancy. The teen also said the baby was stillborn.

Before the sentencing on Thursday, the teen’s mother asked the court to punish her daughter.

“I have no remorse for her. I want the court to take appropriate measures against her,” she said.

The judge sentenced the teen to three years in a youth detention center.
