A man, who was fleeing police after allegedly stealing a vehicle, ran into a house in San Francisco and shot the family's pet dog.

Officers were chasing a stolen vehicle in Antioch around 6.30 p.m. Saturday. The driver of the stolen vehicle drove around a Costco store in what seemed to be an attempt to get ahead of the officers and then moved toward the Antioch downtown area. Someone from the vehicle fired at least one shot, which hit a passing vehicle. No one was injured in the incident, Antioch Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The vehicle later crashed into a parked car. At the time, its two occupants got out and fled on foot. Officers were able to apprehend the driver of the vehicle a couple of blocks away from where the crash happened.

The other person, who allegedly had a handgun with him, jumped over a fence into the backyard of a home. The suspect shot the family's dog before attempting to enter the house.

Police said the homeowner and his teenage son were in the living room when the suspect tried to enter the house. The father and son managed to escape by jumping out of the window into their front yard. The suspect went upstairs and took vehicle keys and a green mechanic's coveralls before fleeing on foot toward K Street. Police couldn't track him.

Police have not revealed the names or other details of the suspects. Antioch sheriff's office helicopters were assisting the officers in the pursuit.

Animal Control personnel also arrived at the scene and took the family's dog to a vet in critical condition. The dog reportedly is stable now.

Last September, two armed men shot a pet dog in the heart when it tried to save its owners from the goons. The bull terrier, named Billy, started barking at the men when they intercepted its owners near their home in West Philadelphia. The men then opened fire at the dog and fled in a car. The bullet pierced the dog's heart, into its left lung, diaphragm, liver, stomach and spleen. The dog has recovered fully after undergoing treatment.
