“Supergirl” stars Chyler Leigh and Floriana Lima revealed that they were pleasantly surprised by how significant Alex and Maggie’s relationship has become to viewers who are struggling with their sexuality.

“There was no way we would have known the impact that this would have had,” Leigh told People at the 28th GLAAD Media Awards ceremony, where “Supergirl” was nominated for best dramatic TV show for its story featuring the lesbian relationship of Alex and Maggie.

“We definitely wanted [Alex and Maggie’s relationship] to be a strong representation, and that’s why we’ve thought so hard about it and wanted it to be beautifully done,” Leigh continued. “So I’m just really happy with the writers of ‘Supergirl,’ who have really brought this to life.”

“We’re just really humbled by it, very proud of it,” added Lima who attended the awards night with Leigh.

Although it was Freeform’s “Shadowhunters” who ultimately took home the award, Leigh wrote in an Instagram post hours prior to the event that all of them from “Supergirl” were already grateful just to be simply nominated.

While details about what’s next for Alex and Maggie are being kept under wraps, Leigh recently implied that the two might be reaching a new milestone in their relationship before Season 2 ends.

“They have a lot to grow together,” Leigh said of the couple in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last month. “But they are [also] realizing how serious they are about each other, so I think there’s some things coming up that would take it maybe to the next level.”

Although that could mean that one of them might pop the big question soon, Leigh’s teaser could also suggest other things, like Maggie moving into Alex’s place or Maggie finally introducing Alex to her family.

“Supergirl” returns from its month-long hiatus with Season 2, episode 18 on Monday, April 24 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
