Kevin Smith has just learned the real reason he loves Melissa Benoist’s performance as Supergirl.

“I’ve loved her pitch-perfect portrayal of Kara and now I know why,” Smith wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of him with Benoist in her Girl of Steel suit. “Melissa gave her #Supergirl her own heart. She’s such a crazy-talented, insanely gracious thespian who makes the very best of very long days. Supergirl gets all the hype but the real hero is #melissabenoist.”

Smith, who is currently directing “Supergirl” Season 2, episode 9, also revealed in his Instagram post that he only has 4 days left to finish shooting the episode.

“We just finished two very long, very productive days on location so I’m looking forward to an easier day on stage, playing with the #CatCo sets,” added Smith, who also praised the work of the episode’s director of photography, James Liston, and the rest of the cast and crew.

Smith ended his post by writing: “This job continues to be Heaven on Earth.”

“Supergirl” Season 2, episode 9 is titled “Supergirl Lives,” which is actually a nod to the canceled “Superman Lives” movie that Smith wrote back in 1996.

“I’m gonna cry talking about this,” Smith said on his YouTube show “Fatman on Batman” last August right after announcing the title of his directorial episode. “That’s what they do over her at f— king Berlanti-verse. They make magic.”

The episode's plot details are being kept under wraps, but Smith wrote on Instagram a couple of weeks ago that it is “filled with deep-cuts characters” from some of his favorite stories in the DC lore. “It’s pure comic book and science fiction fantasy,” he added.

The CW has yet to announce the air date for “Supergirl” Season 2, episode 9.
