James (Mehcad Brooks) decides to be a hero in his own right in next week’s episode of “Supergirl.”

In the trailer for Season 2, episode 5, entitled “Crossfire,” James starts his night job as a vigilante to help make National City a safer place for everyone. “My whole life I’ve been sidekick. My best friends wear capes and their heroes and they save people,” the current CEO of CatCo Worldwide Media says in the clip.

Even though James keeps his new nighttime activity a secret from Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), he apparently decides to tell Winn (Jeremy Jordan) about it. Although Winn was the first person to support Kara in her decision to be a superhero, the CatCo employee-turned-DEO agent is against James’ vigilante work. “You can get yourself killed!” Winn tells James in the video.

Winn’s concerns about James’ safety, however, don’t stop the latter from pursuing his dream of becoming a hero. So Winn — perhaps to make sure that James is safe while doing his vigilante work — agrees to become his sidekick.

“He’s recruited Winn to help him,” “Supergirl” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said of James during a press Q&A last month. “So Winn is his man in the van.”

Kreisberg said that James and Winn working together as vigilante duo gives the show an opportunity to maximize Brooks and Jordan’s great chemistry.

“The two of them are doing this together, and Winn and James together is comedy gold,” the exec producer said. “Winn takes the job at the DEO, but then is lying to everybody about how he’s spending his nights because he’s going out with James. He walks in exhausted, and he walks in with a black eye and says he walked into a door. That’s the fun excitement of building these first 10 episodes.”

Also in episode 5, Kara (Melissa Benoist) gets Mon-El (Chris Wood) a job as an intern at CatCo. In the trailer, Mon-El, who introduces himself as Mike, meets James. The Daxamite also hooks up with James’ secretary, Eve Tashmacher (Andrea Brooks), much to Kara’s surprise.

A ruthless new gang of criminals equipped with dangerous new alien technology also debuts in the trailer. According to the synopsis for the episode, Cadmus is the one staffing the said group of crooks for a secret mission.

“Supergirl” Season 2, episode 5 airs on Monday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
