A huge twist about new villain Reign has been revealed ahead of the Season 3 premiere of “Supergirl.”

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg shared the main reason why Reign (Odette Annable) is unlike any other villain viewers have seen on the CW series before.

“When we meet Reign, she’s just a woman,” Kreisberg said. “Her name is Samantha and she’s a single mom, and she has no idea that she is Reign; she has no idea that she was the baby in the pod at the end of last season, so the journey that she takes this season is watching her realize her heritage and see how it manifests.”

According to the casting call obtained by That Hashtag Show last July, Samantha’s life as a solo parent and a young professional gets complicated when her ruthless, righteous and superhuman alter-ego, Reign, suddenly starts to take over her personality.

Samantha’s daughter is named Ruby (Emma Tremblay). Although smart, sensitive and funny, Ruby is a bit of an outsider with her peers. She’s an independent thinker and fiercely loyal to her mom. Although she and her mom make a good team together, Ruby is not shy about speaking up for herself — even to her own mother — when she feels she’s in the right.

In the comics, Reign is a Worldkiller, a genetically engineered Kryptonian weapon created by Supergirl’s biological father, Zor-El. Just like Supergirl, Reign possesses superhuman strength and has the ability to fly. Created by Michael Green, Mike Johnson and Mahmud Asrar, Reign first appeared in “Supergirl Vol 6 #5” in March 2012.

Interestingly, Annable said during a roundtable interview at San Diego Comic-Con last July that her character was not sent to Earth to go on a killing spree. “She had a very specific agenda that she is out to [achieve] and you’ll see that story unfold throughout the season,” Annable said (via Hidden Remote). “[Her journey is] really amazing because it’s kind of a heartbreaking story. I think you’ll feel for her.”

“Supergirl” Season 3 premieres on Monday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
